Many of America’s local businesses have been catastrophically
crushed by our economic downturn over the past several years. Now more than ever, it is a must to create an online presence for locals as well as national and international  merchants.

To stay in business and gain a profitable share in the marketplace, an effective and affordable local online strategy must be adopted. Owners of successful local businesses  normally don’t have the desire, time or expertise  required to maintain a top ranking on google.

There are gurus online that can put any business on the first page of the search engines, but the cost is astronomical. But what about the so call called “guru”/ thieves. How do you know which ones are trustworthy? How do you sort it all out?

How To Create and Maintain an Online Presence

One alternative is to do it yourself or have it done by one of your employees, or go to your local advertising agency. The problem is, do they have the newest online information and experience, or will they have to experiment with your dollars?

The second alternative is to throw up your hands and just continue on without an online presence and hope for the best. That is not realistic, so it is imperative to come up with a local online strategy that will be easy, effective, low maintenance  and cost effective.

If you go to google and start searching for a suitable strategy for your business, you will find millions of pages pertaining to your query. After doing some research, you will find all sorts of ideas, as well as wild schemes  that will tell you “We guarantee your success”.

The catch is, you pay up front and IF you get lucky, you may see some results that offset your cost. The question is, what is your goal  1. offsetting your advertising cost  2. creating more profit?  My guess it is number two.

The third alternative is to implement the only local online strategy that I am aware of, that gives you all the ingredients quoted above (with simplicity being the key). This  technique involves two or three testimonials, and two or three unique selling points packaged and SEO’d  (search engine optimized) properly for local searches.

Results from this local online strategy are more than fabulous, plus there is no upfront money required. After ranking has been achieved and the business owner approves, there is a very low monthly fee to maintain ranking (normally from fifty to eighty dollars).

Getting  started requires very little effort on your part, just think about some of the reasons your business is unique, and why  someone would want to come to you rather than your competitor. Some examples: your location…. your facility…. your friendly staff…. your inventory…. pricing…. quality of services rendered…. unique services…. specialty items or services…. do you deliver…. same day services…. pull teeth without pain…. accept credit cards…. offer credit or payment plans. Make a good long list and review it later. Ask your employees, friends and customers for input. Most of the time they can see the benefits better than you can.

Next, narrow it down to three or four of the best reasons newcomers would want to do business with you.

Now think of the best customers you have that really love doing business with you, and see if some of them would give a short testimonial in their own words (you may already have some). Pick the best four or five and you have done your part in getting a local online strategy for your business in motion. Could there be anything easier?

Now for the hardest part of the process. Finding someone to do the online work for you that knows what you need, how to put it all together, how to get you on page one in google, and most of all, willing to be paid on results (not  promises).
